• The code’s origin: “Rosabelle” was the name of a song that Bess sang in her vaudeville act when she and Houdini first met. The word was also engraved on her wedding ring. The second part of the phrase, “believe,” was spelled out using a secret system the couple used for their mentalism performances.
• The pact: As a skeptic who dedicated his career to exposing fraudulent mediums, Houdini agreed with Bess that if he died first, he would try to contact her from beyond the grave using this secret code. They agreed that if no contact was made after ten years, it would prove that spirit communication was impossible.
• Medium Arthur Ford’s claim: In January 1929, over two years after Houdini’s death, the well-known medium Arthur Ford held a séance and claimed to have received the coded message from Houdini’s spirit. Bess Houdini initially affirmed that the message Ford provided was the correct one.
• The hoax is revealed: Bess’s affirmation was short-lived. A year before Ford’s séance, a biography written with her cooperation had already published the details of the secret code. When confronted with this information, Bess admitted that Ford’s supposed contact was a hoax.
• The Final Séance: For ten years following Houdini’s death in 1926, Bess held annual séances on Halloween to try and receive the message. Her final séance was on Halloween in 1936. She reportedly extinguished a lit candle that had remained next to a photo of Houdini for ten years and declared, “Houdini did not come through. I do not believe that Houdini can come back to—or to anyone… It is finished. Good night, Harry!”
