Deceptive Stage Illusion

The Dagger Chest (also known as the Dagger Head Chest) is a classic illusion designed by the legendary British magic manufacturer Jack Hughes in the mid-20th century.

How the Dagger Head Chest is Performed

The Setup: An audience volunteer places their head inside a decorated wooden chest.

The Piercing: The magician slides the front doors closed and begins driving up to 15 real metal daggers or swords through slots permeating every angle of the box.

The Vanish: The front door is reopened to reveal that the volunteer’s head has completely vanished despite the dense thicket of blades.

The Restoration: The doors are closed, the daggers are removed, and the helper is released completely unharmed.

About Jack Hughes

Jack Hughes (1906–1981) was a legendary British magic inventor, master craftsman, and dealer who created many of the foundational props and illusions used in modern magic. Originally a cabinet maker by trade, he used his woodcraft skills to build high-quality props for major magic hubs like Davenport’s before launching his own famous shops, including “Unique Magic Studio” and “Maker of Magic”.

• Attaboy (late 1930s): A beloved stage prop featuring a wooden bellboy cutout that magically helps locate a spectator’s chosen card.
• Coins in Glass / Copenetro (1939): A classic mechanical effect where marked coins visually vanish and instantly reappear clinking inside a small shot glass.
• Television Card Frame (1936): A visual trick where a selected playing card instantly appears clamped tightly between two clear sheets of glass inside a small frame.
• Clatter Box (1951): A comedy prop designed to fall apart completely at the worst possible moment during a performance, dropping items everywhere.
• Chair Suspension: A stage illusion allowing a spectator to remain floating horizontally in mid-air after the supporting chairs are pulled away.
