BACKGROUND

The phrase “Magic Castle Walls of Fame” refers to the legendary collection of artist caricatures and photographs that historically lined the hallways and performance spaces of the world-famous private club for magicians, The Magic Castle in Hollywood, California.

For decades, the walls of the Magic Castle served as a visual history of the Academy of Magical Arts. The primary artist behind this iconic gallery was Ted Salter, who drew hundreds of custom caricatures of the world’s finest performing magicians, including legends like Doug Henning, Lance Burton, and Orson Welles. Over time, as the Castle updated its interior and spaces like the Close-Up Gallery changed, many of the original physical caricatures were relocated or sold into private collections.

Because the physical displays on the walls evolved, the permanent historical record of these pieces was preserved in a highly sought-after collector’s book titled The Magic Castle Walls of Fame.
