Background
MAK Magic Company Origins & History
- Founder: The company began under U.F. “Gen” Grant (1901–1978), a prolific magic inventor and dealer who established his firm in Columbus, Ohio.
- Rebranding: In the late 1970s, Grant’s daughter, Mary Ann King, and her husband, Jim King, took over the business. They renamed it MAK Magic, using Mary Ann’s initials.
- Business Model: MAK Magic primarily operates as a wholesale distributor, selling directly to retail magic shops rather than the general public.
Effect & Performance
- The Reveal: The magician presents a large metal or wooden tube and opens it up to show that it is completely empty.
- The Production: Once closed, the magician reaches inside to produce a large volume of items such as silks, sponge balls, or spring flowers.
- The Deception: A key feature of the MAK version is its deceptive construction, which allows the tube to be shown empty both before and after the production.
