The magician Harry Houdini and the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were friends who had a major public falling out over their conflicting views on Spiritualism. Doyle was a devout believer in the movement, while Houdini was a vocal skeptic who devoted the final years of his life to exposing fraudulent mediums.

The friendship: An unlikely match

The pair met in 1920, and despite their differences, they initially formed a close bond.
Doyle, the creator of the hyper-rational detective Sherlock Holmes, had become a fervent spiritualist following the deaths of his son and brother during World War I. He wanted to believe that communication with the dead was possible.
Houdini, the master of illusion and escape, was fascinated by spiritualism but maintained a profound skepticism. He had attended séances hoping to contact his deceased mother, but was only met with disappointment and what he recognized as trickery.
