Cabinet of Foo by Abbott’s Magic

A clever production prop!

The Cabinet of Foo is a classic stage-size production and vanish illusion manufactured by Abbott’s Magic Shop. It stands out as one of the most efficient utility props for its size, allowing magicians to produce large live animals or bulk items under completely surrounded performing conditions.

History and Origins

The illusion was originally invented around 1938 by the legendary British magic creator Jack Hughes, who called it the Spacious Production Box. In 1947, Abbott’s Magic secured the exclusive United States manufacturing rights under license and rebranded the prop as the Cabinet of Foo. Vintage editions from the 1960s were famously handcrafted in Colon, Michigan, by renowned magic builder Arturo (Glenn Babbs).

Magical Effect

  1. Showing it Empty: A small, beautifully lacquered Oriental-style cabinet sits elevated on a low pedestal stand.
  2. Complete Transparency: The magician opens all four side doors or removes the panels, allowing the audience to see right through the center of the box. The cabinet is turned 360 degrees to prove nothing is hidden.
  3. The Production: The doors are closed. The magician opens the top lid and immediately pulls out a massive load of items, such as a large live rabbit, multiple doves, silk streams, or glass bottles.

Collecting and Availability

  • Vintage Models: Original versions from the 1940s to the 1980s are highly sought-after collector pieces. They regularly appear in high-end magic auctions like Potter & Potter Auctions

A real fooler where the magician can show the cabinet (12” x 10” x 17”) all around and open up each panel and completely show all aspects of this cabinet as empty yet produce an incredible amount of items because the load area is nearly as large as the prop itself.

As the pictures indicate, this 50-year-old prop definitely shows it age, wood cracking, warping and wear from performance with paint imperfections throughout.

No instructions, but it will be obvious upon inspection.

Used magic prop, shows imperfections from age and performance use. Overall in highly collectible condition.

This is a bulky item with some weight to it so shipping costs may reflect that depending on your location.

Condition Disclosure for Rare & Vintage Collectible Magic Apparatus

PHOTOS

Please review all listing photos carefully, as they are an important part of the item description. The photos are intended to show the overall visual condition of the apparatus, including possible imperfections, paint quality, decals if applicable, shelf wear, performance wear, and age-related characteristics.

LABELS

MagicTrickCollection.com does not rely on broad condition labels such as “good,” “very good,” “excellent,” or “mint” for vintage and antique magic effects. These terms can be subjective and may mean different things to different collectors. Instead, we believe clear photos from multiple angles provide the most accurate way to evaluate condition without revealing the working secrets of the effect.

OLD VERSUS NEW

Items listed under Rare & Vintage Collectible Magic may range from 10 to 100 years old or more. These are not new magic props. They may show signs of age, handling, storage, repairs, fragility, paint loss, decal wear, or prior performance use.

If your intent is to perform with the item, please understand that some vintage apparatus may require careful handling, adjustment, and practice. This disclosure is provided to help ensure buyers understand they are purchasing a vintage collectible magic item with age, history, and character—not a newly manufactured prop.
