Background
The Magic House of Babcock (Cashmere, WA)
For magic enthusiasts, this refers to the workshop of Mel Babcock, a highly regarded builder of magic apparatus known for precision woodworking and creating collector-quality magic props such as die boxes and cups-and-balls sets.
Mel Babcock is a master magician and woodworker renowned for creating high-quality, collector-grade magic apparatus through his workshop. Born in 1931, he is a third-generation orchardist who began practicing magic at age 13 and later combined his performance skills with expert woodworking to build unique, limited-edition props.
Key Products & Legacy
Mel Babcock is specifically celebrated for his intricate wooden boxes and penetration effects, which often utilize exotic woods like Walnut, Bloodwood, and Zebrawood.
- Signature Apparatus: His most famous creations include various Die Boxes (such as the Egyptian and West models), the See-Thru Block Box, and ABC Blocks.
- The Book: His career is chronicled in the book The Magic House of Babcock: The Story and Magic of Mel Babcock, written by Michael S. Richman and limited to 500 autographed copies.
- Personal Museum: He maintains a personal museum in Cashmere where he displays his historical creations, including a guillotine built in 1962.
Collectors often view his work as a more accessible alternative to high-end brands like Owen Magic, praising the precision and “devilish” methods of his hand-turned props.

Condition Disclosure for Rare & Vintage Collectible Magic Apparatus
PHOTOS
Please review all listing photos carefully, as they are an important part of the item description. The photos are intended to show the overall visual condition of the apparatus, including possible imperfections, paint quality, decals if applicable, shelf wear, performance wear, and age-related characteristics.
LABELS
MagicTrickCollection.com does not rely on broad condition labels such as “good,” “very good,” “excellent,” or “mint” for vintage and antique magic effects. These terms can be subjective and may mean different things to different collectors. Instead, we believe clear photos from multiple angles provide the most accurate way to evaluate condition without revealing the working secrets of the effect.
OLD VERSUS NEW
Items listed under Rare & Vintage Collectible Magic may range from 10 to 100 years old or more. These are not new magic props. They may show signs of age, handling, storage, repairs, fragility, paint loss, decal wear, or prior performance use.
If your intent is to perform with the item, please understand that some vintage apparatus may require careful handling, adjustment, and practice. This disclosure is provided to help ensure buyers understand they are purchasing a vintage collectible magic item with age, history, and character—not a newly manufactured prop.
