The Westgate Bowl Production Illusion is a classic stage magic trick where a magician reveals a large bowl completely filled with water (and often goldfish) from a previously empty container. Originally invented by Howard Westgate around 1939, it was later popularized and physically optimized by prominent magic manufacturers like Bev Taylor’s Town House Magic and Warren Hamilton. 

EFFECT

The Setup: The magician stands on stage holding a cloth-covered tray. Resting on top of this tray is an open-ended, geometric wooden box or panel. 

The Empty Display: The performer lifts the box completely off the tray, showing the audience that they can look straight through the open ends to confirm it is empty. 

The Production Sequence: The box is placed back down onto the tray. In variations like Warren Hamilton’s definitive version, the magician first pulls the cloth up through the tube, producing a cascade of silks and spring flowers to build theatrical suspense. 

The Big Reveal: Finally, the box is lifted up once again, revealing a massive bowl filled with water and goldfish sitting on the tray, completely filling the space where the empty box just was.

• Modern vs. Vintage Variations: Classic collectors look for early models made by Warren Hamilton (ca. 1964). Vintage units sometimes included a clever “two ending” option: a real liquid load or a printed plastic water/fish insert for venues where a live water spill would be a disaster.
