Background

Shin Lim (born September 25, 1991) is a Canadian-American magician renowned for his masterful sleight-of-hand and elaborate close-up card magic. He gained international fame by winning America’s Got Talent (Season 13) in 2018 and subsequently winning America’s Got Talent: The Champions in 2019. Originally trained as a classical pianist, Lim turned to magic as a career after being diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. His performances are characterized by being set to music and performed largely in silence, focusing on visual artistry rather than traditional “patter”.

Career Highlights and Style

  • Signature Style: Lim’s approach is highly artistic, often comparing his routines to the movie Inception. He uses music to synchronize his card manipulations, drawing directly from his background in music theory.
  • Major Wins: Beyond AGT, he is a 2015 FISM World Champion in Close-up Card Magic and a two-time “fooler” on Penn & Teller: Fool Us.
  • Overcoming Injury: In 2016, he suffered a career-threatening injury when he severed two tendons in his thumb. After surgery and intense therapy, he returned to perform routines even more complex than before.
