MAK Magic Egyptian Water Box

The Egyptian Water Box (originally by U.F. Grant and R.N. Menge) is a vintage magic prop produced by MAK Magic that allows a performer to make liquids and objects vanish or materialize.

Background

MAK Magic was primarily known as a major manufacturer and wholesale distributor of professional magic tricks and props. Founded in 1961 by Marvin “Mak” Spanier, the company significantly grew after acquiring the legendary U.F. Grant Magic firm in the late 1970s. The name “MAK” represents the initials of Mary Ann King, U.F. Grant’s daughter, who took over the business with her husband.

R. Norman Menge (1908–1958) was an American magic shop owner, creator, and performer known as “Menge the Magic Maker” and “Norman the Wizard”. Working with partner U.F. Grant, he created illusions like the Egyptian Water Box (1955), the Coin Catcher, and the Ball and Tube. He operated a magic business in the mid-20th century.

The Effect

A typical routine with the Egyptian Water Box involves the following steps:
  • Show Empty: The performer shows the box to be clearly empty.
  • Production: The magician reaches in and produces several items, such as silk scarves.
  • Vanish: Water or wine is poured into the box, and after a “magical wave,” the box is shown empty once more—the liquid has vanished.
  • Final Appearance: A full glass of liquid (often wine or water) is then produced from the box.

Key Features

  • Ingenious Design: The box is specifically designed so that no covers or lids are needed to keep the liquids from spilling.
  • No Moving Parts: According to manufacturer descriptions, the prop contains no hinged gimmicks.
  • Dimensions: The standard MAK Magic version typically measures approximately 7″ x 5″ x 5.5″ and is constructed of decorated wood.

Condition

Condition Disclosure for Rare & Vintage Collectible Magic Apparatus

PHOTOS

Please review all listing photos carefully, as they are an important part of the item description. The photos are intended to show the overall visual condition of the apparatus, including possible imperfections, paint quality, decals if applicable, shelf wear, performance wear, and age-related characteristics.

LABELS

MagicTrickCollection.com does not rely on broad condition labels such as “good,” “very good,” “excellent,” or “mint” for vintage and antique magic effects. These terms can be subjective and may mean different things to different collectors. Instead, we believe clear photos from multiple angles provide the most accurate way to evaluate condition without revealing the working secrets of the effect.

OLD VERSUS NEW

Items listed under Rare & Vintage Collectible Magic may range from 10 to 100 years old or more. These are not new magic props. They may show signs of age, handling, storage, repairs, fragility, paint loss, decal wear, or prior performance use.

If your intent is to perform with the item, please understand that some vintage apparatus may require careful handling, adjustment, and practice. This disclosure is provided to help ensure buyers understand they are purchasing a vintage collectible magic item with age, history, and character—not a newly manufactured prop.
